So when the axe did fall, the likes of Kirk already would have had a clear idea of how they were going to proceed.

You have great faith in Captain Kirk. I hope you're right!

The only hole in the narrative was the fact that Kirk wasn't in command until recently

Guess its a bit of a chicken and egg situation.

I mean if they felt Razors position was untenable, as it appears, then they would have binned him without looking at other options first.

I guess in theory, they could have sounded JJ and Cotter out before pulling the pin, but then that could then be seen as pre determining the decision and would it fill you full of confidence if you were approached like that while Razor was still in the role?

However you paint it, it doesnt look good, from needing to move Razor along to now needing a new coach.

I think the process post 2019 and 2023 has tainted things somewhat, although hopefully people now see some grown ups have taken control again so that bodes well...hopefully.

You're convincing me to change my mind; you must have experience selling insurance or something.

What they knew: At the end of the day, Joseph should be available.

Therefore: We can - at least - get the coach of the ABXV

If that is the starting point, you can run an open recruitment pretty confident you'll get at least one person who fits the profile.

Cotter, Rennie & Schmidt were big missed opportunities after Hansen decided to continue after 2017 Lion's tour, back then they were still early 50s and at top of their game, probably would've prevented the team's steady decline between 2017-2021, especially if Schmidt was in a long term backroom role like Smith was.

In 2026 the timing is just unfortunate because all of Rennie, Schmidt, Cotter are in their 60s and are already planning for life beyond coaching in a few years time.

Kinda looks like only Vern was available - or did Rennie only sign with Glasgow after Steve decided to stay on (and did Joe extend with Ireland for the same reason)?

    Schmidt was unavailable in 2019.

Good answers here by Steve Lancaster. It seems ridiculous to me to expect a running commentary during this process from those choosing the next All Blacks boss.

The field is shrinking fast. That's a big loss for the Blues too

Last man standing at the moment.

Wonder how much of this is blowback after the shabby way NZR has selected and treated coaches in the last 6-7 years.

I would have thought Vern's job at the Blues was safe if he still wanted it

    @sparky Bugger!
I thought he could offer the steel that has been missing.
Who would have predicted 15-20 years ago NZ would struggle to find anyone who actually wants to coach the AB's.
Jamie has the job as he seems the only one who is left with a passport that wants it.
But even he must be thinking his assistant pickings are getting mighty slim.
Offer Rennie whatever he wants to be HC or Ass...

It's going to be disappointing if we only get one of the coaches we want and a bunch of worthless assistants.

Cotter made this decision a while ago. I presume before the Robertson shit hit the fan

    From NZH:

The vastly experienced mentor’s exit from the Blues is not a surprise to the franchise, with the search for his replacement well underway

It's not just a dysfunctional coaching set up which is causing problems, it's also a dysfunctional NZR. Things look like being fixed, but there'll be bumps along the way

NZR would have to have known too as they are his employers.
