Autumn fishing is awesome. Out on the yak again this morning, still better than being at my desk!

My local bar did a night with Thornbridge Brewery recently. The Helles was one of the best beers that I've had in a long time. Genuinely good.

I'm going to blow my own trumpet here and state for the record that I'm a pretty smart cookie.

Kinda related - I heard an argument for the first time the other day - suggesting meritocracy was 'bad', or rather "not as good as one would assume".
It was from a fairly smart guy, and in my intoxicated state... it made a little bit of sense. Which annoyed me.

Started to come across this just before I stopped work. Down to people starting to believe success comes not from hard work and talent but luck. Some CEO probably someone read a Harvard Business Review without thinking and it went viral

Why anyone would employ/promote someone on the basis they hadn't been "lucky" - rather that talent/potential - is fucking beyond me.

I gave Once upon a time in Hollywood another watch.

Probably 4-5 times in total now.

Gee whiz it’s the hardest Tarantino movie to rate in my opinion.

Leo is fucken cool and Brad is even cooler. Their chemistry is awesome. Margot Robbie is lovely to look at. It is full of snappy dialogue ( of course ). The period is captured brilliantly. The Spahn ranch scene and finale are awesomely violent.

    BUT…..

There is heaps of pointless filler, it really, really drags at times. I really drifted off in some scenes. There is fuck all in terms of actual storyline

I still can’t decide where it ranks overall, at its absolute best it’s well up there……but at its worst it’s down there……

So it’s probably about 5th out of 10 ( assuming you rank Kill Bill as two films )

What’s really impressive about it is it’s stacked cast of unknowns at the time…
Austin Butler, Mikey Madison, Sydney Sweeney, Margaret Qualley. Maya Hawke
All pretty big now (pun intended re Sydney Sweeney)
And of course it wouldn’t be a Tarantino movie without feet

How THE FUCK did I miss her !?!?!?

She’s about the hottest chick in Hollywood at the moment.

    Pulp Fiction
    Inglorious Basterds
    Django
    Reservoir Dogs
    OUATIH
    Jackie Brown
    KB2
    H8ful 8
    KB 1
    Death Proof

Even then I’m not sure how accurate this list is ( I haven’t watched Pulp Fiction in years, is it still number one ? Django improves every time I see it, Jackie Brown is great but others have surpassed it etc ) the only sure thing is the one that sits last and even that has some awesome moments.

@Victor-Meldrew yeah sure, I'll subscribe to the telegraph. Might wait until after I represent the All Blacks in this year's rugby championship though.

    Is that you Leicester?

Reading back through the thread a number of posters mention watching Wrestlemania on TV. I don't remember ever seeing a Wrestlemania on TV, I can only remember them on video and having to book them out. IIRC Wrestlemania was already a couple of years old when WWF Superstars of Wrestling started on TV in NZ. (Looking at Wrestlemania 1 on wiki and not many of the wrestlers are still alive. Mr T is the only one from the main event.

Is my memory faulty or others? 🙂

Hart Foundation and Bret Hart were always my favourites, even when they were heels.

you're right, the only way you could watch those big events was to wait for them to come out on VHS
im not sure if there was PPV back then

The posts would have meant the weekly show they had on tv here, was late on a friday night from memory

Its why it was great going back to watch Wrestlemania on Netflix earlier this year, alot of that stuff i never watched back in the day.

    World Athletics tighten eligibility

I remember reading one female athlete from the 80's or early 90's describe sex testing as one of the most terrifying things she did in her sport. She couldn't help worring the test would tell her she was not 'female' enough. Something as blokes we can never understand. Some blokes have a hard enough time accepting drops in testosterone levels.

    It is SO fucking good.
I reckon I've now ridden in over a couple dozen countries... 8/10 of my favourite roads are in NZ.

I'm also at my happiest when riding alone for some reason.

Same, and I am not sure I can explain why

I have just discovered Beth Hart. Fuck me, what a singer. I love her slower melodies, but when she wants to let rip, she nails it too.

Seriously, you guys should check out Spotify. There's all sort of shit on there. I am finding all sorts of stuff I haven't heard before.

@nonpartizan right! And yet last time I was home, every plonker was moaning about the state of the roads and traffic. I live in south London and the main way out is the M25 or country lanes...

Yup, driving in NZ is awesome. Even if you screw up and make a wrong turn there is always a gap in traffic or a slow moving car coming the opposite direction to enable you to turn around or get across traffic.

Connecting flight Sydney to Osaka I meant. The cheaper fares look to be short layovers in Singapore or HK.

The only direct flights to Osaka are JetStar I think and fuck. that.

It just seems like a bit of a waste to ride another shikansen for the sake of having a direct flight, and probably another night in an hotel in Tokyo.

I flew from Cairns to Osaka on Jet Star last year as it was the only choice, flight was almost totally empty, dream stuff
