the Canterbury earthquakes highlighted how underinsured a lot of NZ were (largely still are) for both private and commercial insurances.

What's the situation now? Can you even get earthquake insurance in NZ?

@NTA It's definitely getting harder to get insurance after the two SI (Chch & Kaikoura) earthquakes. We just reinsured at work (in Wellington) and it's gone up $400K from the previous year.

25,000 capacity seems pretty small but I guess it won't look so bad on TV when Cantabs stop using it after 8-10 years.

        I like it!

My wife and I are on a medium term plan to move back to NZ and have bought land about an hour out of Christchurch.

Going to AB and Chiefs games under the roof will be awesome, and this should help the city develop.

        Excellent!

@NTA Wellington is harder to insure than the SI, many of the large risks are being placed with off shore insurers (like Lloyds) with huge excesses.

But outside Wellington earthquake cover still largely available although they are imposing stricter terms, and domestic is largely dealt with by the EQC, although insurer rates for pre 1940 homes are usually much higher south of Taupo and I think IAG (NZI, AMI, State, Lantern) are not keen on parts of Wellington for domestic risks

That stadium looks nice. I think the business case depends on how many concerts you can actually attract.

A 25K stadium probably means only tier 2 test matches with Auckland and Wellington to still get the big tests.

25,000 seater that will look like a click clack container with that see through roof.

What a waste. This is the perfect opportunity to build something that is future proof with the ever growing populations and they are going with a 25,000 seater.

@shark is not a happy camper, that is for sure

@Hooroo it should be a minimum of 35,000 to be a viable stadium for that area. Not bothered by the roof, something different.

Seems a waste of time having insurance if you can’t build a like for like replacement.

                          Totally agree.

Shark was mentioning on Facebook last night that with a stadium at 25k, it is only in competition for tests with Waikato Stadium, Albany etc. That makes it rather small. 3rd biggest city in NZ and growing.

a 'like for like' rebuild isnt what they are planning...most insurance policies have specific clauses about rebuilding differently at different sites etc.

@Kirwan How big is Dunedin's stadium?

EDIT: Seems that it's 31k, but I'm not sure about temporary seating. Would've thought that around 35 or 40k was the minimum for a major AB test.
