Who do you guys think MacDonald will select for the first game? I wonder if a few ABs will start from the bench? I'm assuming that Niuia, Vikena, Hunt, Faiane, and Narawa will be unavailable. Probably Gibson too.

Big calls at 12 and lock. I'll guess this XXIII:

    1 Hodgman
    2 Eklund
    3 Laulala
    4 Tuipulotu
    5 Goodhue
    6 Ioane
    7 Papalii
    8 Sotutu
    9 Christie
    10 Black
    11 Clarke
    12 Plummer
    13 Ioane
    14 Telea
    15 Perofeta

    16 Tolai
    17 Karl T
    18 Ofa T
    19 Cowley-Tuioti
    20 Choat
    21 Nock
    22 Tele'a
    23 Sullivan/Lam

Not sure all the ABs will be selected in round one, especially the loose forwards and maybe one of the props. Would like to see Ofa T start, as the Blues are his team. Akira Ioane or Sotutu to be subbed and the other two loose forwards to stay on the field. Hunt could've been handy as a turnover option in the early rounds. I'd prefer to have Nock and Pierce starting. Hope Plummer has improved his defence at 12!

      I think that's a pretty good prediction.

Midfield is a big issue until Faiane returns. Laumape-PUJ combo will back themselves to cause havoc week 1.

I'd rather see Nock start at 9 but no doubt Christie will get first crack.

        Looks about right

I think Sullivan might start at 15 though. MacDonald has made some very positive comments about him.

If the Blues don't play a preseason game will Ofa's ban then include the first SRA game? The 3-week suspension included the last 2 AB games and any rugby up until and including February 20. So he wouldn't have been able to play against the Crusaders this Sat.

The ABs weren't available for games last Fri/Sat so I doubt that counted.

@Bovidae Good question. The judicial decison worded the suspension as follows:

The player is therefore suspended for 3 weeks, up to and including Saturday 20 February 2021. This sanction includes the Player's next three scheduled matches as presented.”

What prevails, the period of the ban (up to and including 20 February) or the number of matches (3)? You could argue that he was available for the preseason game against the Crusaders, which was a scheduled game, which has been cancelled/postponed due to circumstances beyond his control, and that therefore that game should count as his third match anyway.

I think the period of the ban will prevail, just using common sense in this time of pandemic, and that he'll be allowed to play the Blues' first SRA game.

I actually think Ofa would miss week 1 in that scenario.

Swinton is out week 1 for Tahs because they had one preseason game cancelled that he wasn't able to count towards his ban.

@Stargazer The 1 Tah preseason game did play did count towards Swinton's ban but he had an extra week ban (4) compared to Ofa (3).

                        https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-union/waratahs-stars-under-injury-clouds-as-brumbies-lose-wright-for-six-rounds-20210207-p570ag.html

Swinton was shown a red card on his Test debut against the All Blacks last year and subsequently received a four-week ban.

Coach Rob Penney confirmed Swinton is “no chance” of taking on the Reds, but he can consider himself a tad unlucky. Had the Waratahs not been forced to cancel their January 30 trial against the Brumbies, Swinton’s four match ban would have elapsed by round one.

@KiwiMurph Yeah, that's why I'm asking whether he'd have been available for the first preseason game that was cancelled. If he wasn't available, then he would still have a 4th game to sit out regardless of the cancellation.

The player is therefore suspended for 4 weeks, up to and including Saturday 6 February 2021.

Yeah that ban was handed out prior to the Super AU schedule being finalised so I wouldn't read into that date.

@KiwiMurph It would have included all 4 matches he'd have to miss though. 2 Tri Nations and 2 preseason.

True. The date becomes useless in a situation like this though - as the 4 matches is the key part, not the date.

I am assuming this is the final roster spot that was never filled?

He played under Leon at Ta$man.

A bit of a strange one to be honest.
