Hurricanes 2024
-
@Tim I’m hoping Kini Naholo and Reuben Love will kick on next year, but not enough depth in the forwards or quality at First Five to challenge for the title I fear.
@sparky if Cameron gets injured we are in trouble. I feel like that's the case with most teams this year though so I'm not too bothered.
I.e. Dmac is crucial to the Chiefs, Burke (already out) is crucial to the Crusaders, Perofeta to the Blues etc.

I hope it doesn't happen
But Barrett, Higgins and Proctor could be an excellent combo. With PUJ / Sullivan as a backup.

2023 was a topsy turvy year and it ultimately ended in disappointment after the Canes looked like they were getting a roll on. Despite losing Dane Coles and Ardie Savea for next year's campaign, the Hurricanes, with a maturing side will look to take that momentum into next season.
Looking ahead to 2024, we've got a new coach in Clark Laidlaw which should bring plenty of fresh thinking into the side and we also have Brad Shields coming back in which should offset some of that experience lost.

Strong front row and backs, but lack a top quality wing. Savea big loss. Dark horse for the title? Could cause some upsets in playoffs.

@KiwiMurph I think he was meaning ASav, not JSav.

@Stargazer oh righto.
-
Ben Grant, an Aussie who did not set the world on fire during the NPC, selected but Dom Bird left outside the squad, that's weird.
@cgrant agreed that is strange. Bird is over 2m tall and probably super level quality. 32 so not very old but more on the experienced end. They should learn from the Boks who do not dispose of old players but rather incorporate them to help build the culture and mentor younger players.

@cgrant selecting an Aussie over a Kiwi aswell is questionable in my book. Ben Grant has the height but he seems to be too skinny for Super. He’ll need to put on a few kegs.

Seems the Canes are hogging too many good midfielders, that is a lot of talent there that could be sitting on the bench or not at all.
-
@Stargazer The annoying thing about this squad is the amount of locks we've signed. We could have signed one less lock and signed up McClutchie instead. Just seems so odd.
I wonder who's in the wider squad? Maybe he's in there potentially with a promise that he will have a full contract in 2025.

Pretty meh about whether we got McClutchie (just me,I think he ok but....), an guess they risking Cameron, Morgan staying fit, with Love and Godfrey maybe getting a run if needed

Looks like a few of the Canes boys have started pre season early. This off TJ Perenara's Insta.

So the Canes will again play a game in that hellhole in Palmerston North in 2024. Meaning that we will at best get a preseason game, unless another franchises gives us one of their home games (MP?).
@Stargazer they've already announced the pre season games. We are playing the Highlanders in Queenstown and Moana Pasifika at the training base in Upper Hutt.
