If we get an injury and Hotham plays, he better be fucking good.
It’s neat to be the teacher’s pet until it needs to be a real thing. One injury and we find out.
@gt12 bring it on I say. Not the injury but him getting his opportunity. Two ways it could go in my view - he could be the next Kevin Senio or the next Jimmy Cowan.
I see similarities in Hotham’s game to both of these guys. One was a 50 test AB and the other played 3 or 4 minutes at the end of a Bledisloe match and that’s it.
-
like with Perofeta in the first test...surprised to see him there (if hotham did make the squad).....but i hope he smashes it, would do may heart some good to come out of this series with a couple of options

@Kirwan well everything is banking on Christies fitness, a 22 test veteran...after that we are in raw rookie territory, regardless.
Injuries are part of the game, we have plenty of talented 9s running about, but such as been the quality of Aaron Smith, that we went back to TJ and now rely on Christie with Roigards absence.
Think you are making an awful lot of something that in the greater scheme, will be irrelevant if Christie doesn't get injured, or if he does, I dont think that 3rd/5th spot will matter either way.
Two injuries away from Bell and Hotham being in the 23, I'd like better options. Sue me

I am not arguing that Bell and Hotham should be picked.
My disagreement is calling them "journeymen" and then advocating guys who at 29 and 24 are the embodiment of guys who have worked hard and risen quite a long way, but are never going to be long term prospects for the ABs, over young guys who may well be.

Blame the last coaches for not creating depth then.
How do we reckon Hoskins would’ve gone in the tight stuff on Saturday night. He wouldn’t have handled it. That’s why he wasn’t picked.I didn't see Hoskins make a single mistake Saturday night.
And which 2024 Super team of forwards has been the most consistently tough and physical and playing like a test team would? The 2024 Crusaders pack!??Consistently?!?

Jeepers. The Cantabs made less fuss about how good their team was after seven years. You guys are going to be unbearable if you win any more championships.
We get that your new coach is very good, and has a better game plan than the others. That doesn't suddenly mean all your players are superstars.

Something to truly make DMac smile when kicking at goal

@KiwiMurph probably be cheaper and less trouble for the players to listen to the ref

When Hotham actually started to play well I could have sworn I was watching Perenara from a decade ago.

I'd prefer it if there wasn't a visible shot clock. The kickers have plenty of time
The reason you need a clock is because you are time wasting. You are either trying to prevent a kickoff, use up time during a card, or burn time at the end of the match because you are in front. All negative time wasting
Kiwis get all hot about time wasting in other areas of the game but not this one
Also, fans should criticise their player when they fuck up not the officials. It shouldn't be their job to hand hold you during time wasting. At most a ref should say "Hurry up"

Yeah nah.
This isn't the 1980s. They have massive screens these days. DMac has enough to worry about in his routine he should be able to have a visual cue rather than trying to guess in his head after getting an audible cue from a ref (be it 20 seconds or 10 seconds or whatever).
They have screens with countdowns in
MLB for pitchers and hitters, for Tennis and serving etcNeed to get with the times.
-
personally i would think it would be less distracting to kick it as quick as possibly after a 10 second warning than look up at a screen (arent always behind the posts) to check how much time you have, then re target etc....to each their own

@KiwiMurph surely it should be part of your routine? In any case, just ask the ref before the game to give you markers.

pretty sure they do already, i believe the ref told him at 20 and 10 seconds, hell, they do in club rugby

Just remove all doubt and have a countdown on the screens.
It's also going to be on the broadcast which is helpful for the fans.
I don't understand this aversion to using the technology.
Quote from DMac
But, unlike other sports such as basketball, there has been no provision of a shot clock to let the kickers, or those fans, know how long is left on the timer. "I’m not making any excuses, but it would help [if there was a shot clock]," McKenzie said. "I think it would be great if there was a timer on the screen and you could sort of get a bit of an idea. "My counting in my head, in 60sec, especially when I’m trying to focus on the kick, is not that great." -

What if the ref disagrees with the shot clock?

The ref is already aligned to the stadium. The ref nowadays waits for the hooter to go before blowing half time and full time. The ref waits for the 10 second countdown on the big screen before kicking off etc.

@KiwiMurph yeah much like everyone else I'm not that fussed, it just seems like a silly extra. We gonna put a 5 second clear clock up now too when the ball becomes available at the breakdown?

I would like to hear the view of kickers and their view. Players have set routines they go through.
I think the time wasting is taken care of with these time limits themselves - it was before the time limits were introduced that people were taking the piss.
